I truly believe that eradicating the mindless death penalty is an impossible feat. How do you rationalize with someone who's fueled by sadism, ignorance, or more commonly, raw emotion.
It matters not that it fails on the cost vs benefit test. Nor does it matter that the consensus is that if offers no appreciable deterrent effect.
It's telling that American society is not even embarrassed by the inequitable application of the death penalty nor how it serves to highlight other inequalities within the criminal justice system and in the country at large. While embarrassment might not be the catalyst of choice,it would be a sign that there is life upstairs.
Support for the death penalty screams inability to look at the big picture. It's a white flag being waved by a society that lacks imagination and zeal. The strongest argument for it comes from the sadist who can honestly admit that he supports it because it turns him on.
I sympathize with those who have lost loved ones due to criminal violence. But I certainly would not expect society's policies to be a reflection of their or my state of mind when grieving.
People in mourning are typically more vulnerable to cockamamy suggestions than usual. And in order to make points or promote a cause, there are countless deplorable charlatans who won't hesitate to take advantage of them.
And scumbag politicians who consistently dupe the public into accepting the ludicrous notion that supporting the death penalty equates to "being tough on crime" are no better than losers who use Rohypnol to get sex. Being tough on crime happens pre crime, not post crime. And ideally it involves the development and molding of malleable young minds in such a way that they will not simply acquiesce to what is popular at the moment, nor merely opt for the path of least resistance.
And to the "religious" death penalty supporters, well really to the "Christian" ones, Are you at all concerned about the soul of the of the executed? of the executioner? Jesus CHRIST, addressed your hypocritical mindsets at the cross, if I recall correctly.
But hark! I almost forgot. I'm talking to the walls. How do you rationalize with someone who's fueled by sadism, ignorance, or more commonly, raw emotion.
